Esa es la letra de la canción Despedir a los Glaciares del cantautor uruguayo Jorge Drexler. Ganador del Oscar por su canción Al Otro lado del Río en la película Diarios de Motocicleta acerca de la vida del revolucionario Che Guevara.
En América Latina, aparte de los famosos gigantes de hielo en la cordillera de los Andes al sur del continente también tenemos glaciares en zonas menos esperadas: los trópicos. Colombia tiene 6 glaciares, México tiene 3 y Venezuela tiene 1.
Gracias a ellos tenemos agua fluyendo de las montañas a los campos agrícolas y a las ciudades, gracias a ellos podemos sentirnos humildes ante el reto de cruzar un glaciar al subir una montaña, gracias a ellos podemos escribir poesía inspirada en su belleza y magnitud.
Sin embargo, como muchas bellezas de este mundo, ellos también sucumben ante la avaricia de los humanos del siglo XXI. Gigantes silenciosos que dan su sayonara gota a gota. En Colombia se estima que los glaciares tienen 30 años más de vida, en México 15 y en Venezuela 5. Cuando la autora de este blog cumpla 43 años, México ya no tendrá glaciares.
Entonces, tenemos dos opciones: frenar la crisis climática o encontrar la manera digna de despedir a los glaciares.
En el caso de la primera opción, solo hace falta que tengamos la voluntad para repensar nuestro estilos de vida - abandonar nuestros excesos y repensar nuestro consumo, que decidamos como sociedad (exigiendo a nuestros gobiernos y empresas) que es vital invertir en la naturaleza y abandonar nuestro apoyo a los combustibles fósiles.
En el caso de la segunda opción, será necesario decidir cómo queremos vivir una vida donde el agua ya no cae de la montaña. decidir cómo le vamos a explicar a nuestro hijos que antes había unas esculturas naturales de hielo maravillosas que ellos nunca podrán ver ni experimentar y que ya no están por que nos ganó la apatía.

Dato para tu próximo concurso de cultura pop: A Drexler no se le permitió cantar su canción en los Oscares porque no era lo suficientemente famoso - Antonio Banderas y Carlos Santana tocaron en su lugar. Entonces, cuando Drexler recibió el premio, en lugar de dar un discurso cantó un poco de la canción.

In the case of the second option, it will be necessary to decide how we want to live a life where the water no longer falls from the mountain; decide how we are going to explain to our children that before there were some wonderful natural ice sculptures that they will never be able to see or experience and that are no longer there because apathy got the best of us.
